4 Seasons Eating

What is FOUR SEASONS EATING?

Simply put, it is eating foods that are considered “in season”. Knowing which foods are “in season” can be difficult considering that grocery stores sell just about any and all fruits and vegetables year round. But don’t worry! I am providing a guide that will help you choose the best time of year to purchase certain foods.

Why does eating “in season” food matter?

  • TASTE- Have you ever eaten a tomato fresh from your garden? How does that compare to a store-bought tomato in December? No comparison! In fact, I went 20 something years believing I did not like pineapple UNTIL I had a fresh pineapple in Hawaii. Now I know I LOVE them, it just has to be in-season and fresh.
  • NUTRIENTS- Foods that are in-season are more nutritious. When food is harvested out of season, it is typically from non-local states or countries. This means they have traveled a long way thus losing nutrients in transit. To sell produce to consumers far away, farmers must pick the fruits and vegetables before they are completely ripe. They miss out on the nutrients that naturally develop from the sun, rain, soil, and air.
  • PRICE- In-season produce is typically more affordable. It costs less to bring food from a local farm growing in-season food than it does bringing food from far away.
  • COMMUNITY SUPPORT- When you purchase local in-person food, you’re supporting your community’s small farmers. Check out your local Farmer’s Market and get to know your farmers! If organic, Non-GMO is important to you, this is a great time to find a farmer that uses these practices.

So there you have it! If you want delicious food that is more nutritious, more affordable, and supports your community, choose FOUR SEASONS EATING!
