Start your day with creamy, delicious Nutella!
Do you think it’s a good idea to begin your day with consuming 21 grams of sugar, soy lecithin, and MSG?
No? Me neither.
Nutella has been around for over 50 years. Kids especially go crazy over this stuff.
But I believe we can do better!
Sugar content: The American Heart Association recommends most American women eat no more than 100 calories per day of sugar (six teaspoons or 20 grams) and no more than 150 calories per day for men (or about nine teaspoons or 36 grams). I personally feel like this is on the high side, BUT for women, 2 TBSP of Nutella EXCEEDS the recommended DAILY amount of sugar for women.
And let’s not forget about kids. 2 TBSP of Nutella slathered on a typical piece of bread would be ALMOST DOUBLE the amount they should consume for the.entire.day.
Not ok.
Soy Lecithin: Soy lecithin is extracted from raw soybeans. First the oil is extracted using a chemical solvent, like hexane, and then the oil is processed (which is called degumming) so that the lecithin is separated and dried. Supposedly, the hexane is removed in another multi-step process; however, there is still hexane residue remaining which is not regulated by the FDA currently. That’s a no-go for me.
MSG: Better known as ‘MSG,’ Monosodium Glutamate is a salt that comes out of the amino acid Glutamic Acid, or glutamate. In layman’s terms, this means that a single (mono) sodium atom is added to glutamate. Nutella adds this ingredient to one of the primary flavors of its food, vanilla. Why?
Well, for the same reason that so many other people add it to their foods; because MSG helps to enhance flavor. So, Nutella adds it to their product in order to make it more flavorful. That would be great and all, if MSG didn’t cause a number of side effects. I am very sensitive to MSG and have personally seen the negative impact it has on a majority of my patients. I recommend steering clear.
