Top 5 Tips for Easier Nights with Baby
1. Do Not, I repeat, DO NOT put snap-up jammies on your baby for bedtime. We only made this mistake once as we cussed our way through trying to snap 18 tiny little buttons at 1am cross-eyed and sleep deprived. Buy the zip up jammies. You’ll thank me. Just wait until an appropriate time of day to do so.
2. Babies drool, and pee, and have blowouts while they sleep. It’s amazing what they can do in their sleep! If your baby is sleeping in a bassinet or crib, always put a waterproof sheet underneath. Pro tip: put another sheet and waterproof sheet underneath the top two layers so all you have to do is remove the top two layers when sh!t hits the fan. If it does hit the fan, have your baby checked out because that ain’t right.
3. Never start a bedtime routine that you won’t be ok with doing over and over for months and years. Does drawing a warm bath with rose petals for baby, then wrapping them in a warm towel that you took directly from the dryer, then singing Old McDonald 34 times while getting their jammies on, and then reading a 100 page book of nursery rhymes sound like something you want to do every single night? Maybe if you’re Mother Theresa but I’m the kind of mom that likes to keep my sanity.
4. Therefore, establish a simple and consistent bedtime routine. Kids love knowing what to expect. Our bedtime routines have varied throughout the years but they still consist of baths and then quiet time before bed.
5. I highly recommend using a white noise machine. We chose a small one that was easy to travel with. This helped create some comfort and familiarity for our kiddos when sleeping away from home.
Those are my Top 5 tips to make night time a little easier for us mamas.
