Best First Foods for Baby!

(Plant Based, Paleo, and Vegan Friendly)

Many of you saw my Skip the Rice Cereal for Baby Post and have asked “So what do I feed my baby?!”

Around the age of 6 months, most experts recommend starting baby on solid food to compliment their formula or breastmilk intake. If your baby isn’t quite ready at 6 months, don’t fret!

What foods are best?

Below are 10 nutritious foods that are great to introduce to your baby: (age 6+ mos)

1. Avocado- A healthy fat and high in Niacin, Vitamin’s B, E, & K.

2. Banana- High in potassium, magnesium, and Vitamins B6 & C.

3. Green Peas- Great source of resistant starch, protein, fiber, and Vitamins A & K

4. Blackberries/Blueberries (cooked)- High in Vitamin C, Fiber, and antioxidants

5. Sweet Potato (baked or steamed)- Good source of potassium, Vitamin C, and fiber.

6. Pears (cooked)- High in Vitamins A, C, and Folate.

Tips for introducing foods to baby:

– Introduce 1 food at a time and wait a few days to catch any possibly food allergies/sensitivities.

– Offer solids after formula or breastfeeding session.

– You can cook and purée these foods, allow to cool before giving to baby OR you may choose to follow Baby LED Weaning where you offer smaller portions and allow your baby to take small bites on their own. Please research before trying BLW.

– Avoid sweetening the foods

Foods to avoid:

– Acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus as they can irritate baby’s digestive tract

– High-Nitrate foods such as spinach, celery, lettuce, and beets.

– See my post on Foods to Avoid to read about additional foods such as lettuce, whole nuts, whole grapes, etc!
