In a perfect world (or at least in mine) all fruits and vegetables would be certified organic. But we don’t live in that world unfortunately *sigh*
But don’t worry, I’m going to share which fruits and vegetables are best to purchase organic and which ones matter less.
Let’s start with the Dirty Dozen List.
This is a list created by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that tests various fruits and vegetables to find which ones contain the highest levels of pesticide residue.
Here are the top offenders (2019) These fruits and vegetables are best to purchase organic if you can.
1. Strawberries
2. Spinach
3. Kale
4. Nectarines
5. Apples
6. Grapes
7. Peaches
8. Cherries
9. Pears
10. Tomatoes
11. Celery
12. Potatoes
These are the foods highest in pesticide residue so these are really important to purchase organic. Especially if you are using these to make homemade baby food or feeding them to your children.
Unfortunately washing them does not make much difference as the pesticides have been absorbed into the food. But nonetheless, always wash your produce organic or not.
Here is the Clean 15 list provided by the EWG. These fruits and vegetables are less important to purchase organic in regard to pesticide residue.
1. Avocado
2. Sweet Corn
3. Pineapple
4. Frozen sweet peas
5. Onion
6. Papaya
7. Eggplant
8. Asparagus
9. Kiwis
10. Cabbage
11. Cauliflower
12. Cantaloupe
13. Broccoli
14. Mushroom
15. Honey Dew Melon
Keep in mind that organic and GMO or different. If your goal is to minimize pesticide residue and GMOs, then organic is a good idea especially when it comes to corn.
