Swap it Out: Peanuts for Barukas

This one is amazing and confusing. You see, both of these are called nuts. However, peanuts are actually legumes and Barùkas are actually part of the drupe (fruit) family like almonds!

I chose these two because their taste profiles are similar; however, the nutrient profiles are very different!

First off, what are Baruka Nuts? These are not commonly known in the U.S. but are ramping up to become the next superfood! They are indigenous to the Brazilian Savanna.

Why are they a better choice than peanuts? Or really any other nut? Let’s take a look at their nutrient profile!

Barùkas:

– Contain more fiber than any other nut

– Contain all of the essential amino acids

– Pack more antioxidants than blueberries

– Great source of calcium, copper, potassium, and zinc.

So what do they taste like? Heaven, that’s what! It’s like a peanut and cashew had a baby and named it Baruka. Seriously, so good!

97% of Americans are deficient in fiber. This is a GREAT way to get a high dose of fiber into your diet.

Here’s the not so great news 😔

Harvesting these are nuts are a way of life for many Brazilians; however, the savanna is suffering devastation at an alarming rate much like their Rainforest. If you want to learn more about helping this direct cause, please visit the link below to help donate and/or purchase these amazing “nuts”!
