Canada dramatically overhauled its iconic Food Guide this year and the changes are huge.
They spent years reviewing the research and ensuring that they looked only at the unbiased, well controlled studies.
Based on their findings, Canada updated its food guide to reduce dairy recommendations as well as animal protein.
They recommend water not milk.
They recommend plant protein over animal protein.
And they recommend plenty of fruits and vegetables.
And no more portion or serving recommendations. Canada wants their people to focus on proportions of what they’re eating. They recommend half of their plate to be filled with fruits and vegetables and the other half with healthy non-processed grains and plant proteins.
Specifically, the guide says, “The regular intake of plant-based foods – vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and plant-based proteins – can have positive effects on health,” including lower risk of cardiovascular disease, colon cancer and type 2 diabetes.”
I commend Canada’s government for taking a strong stance on nutrition and making some tough decisions that will ultimately affect the pockets of two very large food industries.
It’s clear that when it comes to nutrition, the health of their people is more important than money.
Over here in the US, our government is still recommending a glass of milk and animal protein with every meal even though solid research clearly proves both as being detrimental to overall health.
We can absolutely take some notes from our neighboring country.
Health should trump money. Sadly, we seem to be moving in the wrong direction.
So even though I’m American, I’ll be eating as if I’m Canadian…
